Dec 23, 2025

A fire broke out at 2:51 p.m. on November 26, 2025, at Wang Fuk Court, a residential estate in Tai Po in Hong Kong’s New Territories, affecting seven buildings. The fire was classified at the highest alarm level by the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, and was largely brought under control after more than 43 hours. According to CCTV News (2025), as of December 3, the fire had claimed 159 lives, and identification and search efforts are still ongoing.

According to an official investigation (Xinhua Net, 2025), the fire was likely caused by a blaze involving exterior protective netting and scaffolding. The buildings were under renovation at the time, with bamboo scaffolding and plastic netting around the facades, which fueled the rapid spread of the fire to nearby buildings.

A 37-year-old firefighter was killed in the blaze. Tributes have poured in from across society, including the firefighting community, honoring his sacrifice and funeral arrangements as a fallen hero. The Fire Services Department said the firefighter demonstrated exceptional courage and selfless devotion by advancing into the flames, fully embodying the mission of the fire service to rescue those in danger and serve the public (Xinhua Net, 2025).

This article is dedicated to all current and former firefighters. Their bravery, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
